Where double extra strong (xxs) is used

Double extra strong is the heaviest wall in B36.10M in the sizes where it exists. It is a specialised item for very high pressure in small and medium bore, and the bore that is left is small enough that flow capacity has to be checked as carefully as pressure.

How the wall changes with size

The wall in double extra strong (xxs) is 0.190 in (4.8 mm) at NPS 1/8 and 1.000 in (25.4 mm) at NPS 12. Measured against the pipe it belongs to, that is 46.9% of the outside diameter at the small end and 7.8% at the large end, so the wall does not keep pace with the diameter. The pressure the pipe will hold moves the same way. On the basis used throughout this site (ASME B31.3, S = 20,000 psi, nominal wall, no corrosion allowance) double extra strong (xxs) holds about 6,807 psig at NPS 4 and about 3,347 psig at NPS 12. A schedule is therefore chosen size by size, from a calculation, and not once for a whole plant.
