Where schedule 5 is used

Schedule 5 is the lightest wall B36.10M publishes. It is used far more in stainless steel, as Schedule 5S, than in carbon steel, where a wall this thin leaves almost nothing for corrosion. It is too thin to thread and is joined by welding or by mechanical couplings.

How the wall changes with size

The wall in schedule 5 is 0.065 in (1.7 mm) at NPS 1/2 and 0.250 in (6.3 mm) at NPS 30. Measured against the pipe it belongs to, that is 7.7% of the outside diameter at the small end and 0.8% at the large end, so the wall does not keep pace with the diameter. The pressure the pipe will hold moves the same way. On the basis used throughout this site (ASME B31.3, S = 20,000 psi, nominal wall, no corrosion allowance) schedule 5 holds about 3,299 psig at NPS 1/2 and about 336 psig at NPS 30. A schedule is therefore chosen size by size, from a calculation, and not once for a whole plant.
