What NPS 3 1/2 is
NPS 3 1/2 pipe measures 4.000 in (101.6 mm) across the outside, which is 0.500 in more than the 3 1/2 in its name suggests. Below NPS 14 the designation is a label inherited from iron pipe sizing and matches neither the outside diameter nor the bore of any schedule exactly. The metric designator is DN 90, which is likewise a label and not a measurement in millimetres. Whatever the schedule, the outside diameter stays at 4.000 in (101.6 mm): a heavier wall grows inward and takes the difference out of the bore.
Seldom specified in new work. B36.10M, B16.5 and B16.9 all still publish it, but most size lists step from NPS 3 to NPS 4 and stock is correspondingly thin.

Inside diameter is OD − 2t. Weight is calculated for carbon steel as w = 10.69 × t × (OD − t) lb/ft and is the plain-end weight, excluding coatings, linings and fittings. Water-filled weight adds fresh water at 8.3454 lb per US gallon.
Reading the table
B36.10 lists 7 designations in NPS 3 1/2, which between them give 5 different wall thicknesses. The lightest is Schedule 5 at 0.083 in (2.1 mm) and the heaviest is Schedule 80 at 0.318 in (8.1 mm). Going from one to the other takes the bore from 3.834 in (97.4 mm) down to 3.364 in (85.4 mm), which cuts the flow area by 23% and raises the weight from 3.48 to 12.52 lb/ft, a factor of 3.6.
Standard weight equals Schedule 40 in this size. Extra strong equals Schedule 80. Where two designations share a wall they are the same pipe under two names, and either may appear on a mill certificate. The match is specific to the size, so it is the wall thickness in inches that should go on a requisition, not the designation alone.
For handling and support loads, a 20 ft length of standard weight NPS 3 1/2 pipe weighs about 182 lb (83 kg) empty and 268 lb (122 kg) full of water. The water-filled figure is the one that governs pipe support spacing and the load during a hydrostatic test, including on lines that will carry gas or vapour in service.
Flow and pressure capacity by schedule
Two questions decide a schedule: how much the bore will carry, and how much pressure the wall will hold. The flow columns give the water flow through each bore at three velocities that bracket ordinary liquid service, from a pump suction line at the low end to a pump discharge line at the high end. The pressure columns are the ASME B31.3 pressure design equation solved for pressure, first on the nominal wall and then on the wall after the 12.5% mill under-tolerance that seamless pipe is allowed.
| Schedule | Flow at 3 ft/s (US gpm) | Flow at 6 ft/s (US gpm) | Flow at 10 ft/s (US gpm) | Pressure, nominal wall | Pressure, wall less 12.5% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Sch 10 | 103.8 | 207.7 | 346.1 | 1,230 psig | 1,073 psig |
| Sch 30 | 96.5 | 192.9 | 321.5 | 1,953 psig | 1,701 psig |

| XS | 83.1 | 166.2 | 277.0 | 3,396 psig | 2,946 psig |
Flow is velocity × flow area. Pressure is P = 2·S·t / (D − 2·Y·t) with S = 20,000 psi, E = W = 1.0 and Y = 0.4: seamless carbon steel such as A106 Gr B at moderate temperature, with no corrosion allowance and no threading allowance. It is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a design rating.
The method behind both halves of that table is set out in the pipe sizing guide and the wall thickness guide, each with a worked example.
Flanges for NPS 3 1/2 pipe
ASME B16.5 sizes a flange from the NPS and the pressure class, never from the schedule, so every flange below fits every wall in the table above. In NPS 3 1/2 a Class 150 flange is 8.50 in (215.9 mm) across and 0.88 in (22.4 mm) thick, held by 8 bolts of 5/8 in. A Class 600 flange for the same pipe is 9.00 in (228.6 mm) across and 1.38 in (35.1 mm) thick, on 8 bolts of 7/8 in. Because the bolt circle moves with the class, flanges of two different classes will not bolt together even though both fit the pipe.
| Class | Flange OD | Thickness | Bolt circle | Bolting | Raised face OD | Rating @ 100 °F |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class 150 | 8.50215.90 mm | 0.8822.35 mm | 7.00177.80 mm | 8 × 5/8 in | 5.50139.70 mm | 285 psig |
| Class 300 | 9.00228.60 mm | 1.1228.45 mm | 7.25184.15 mm | 8 × 3/4 in | 5.50139.70 mm | 740 psig |
| Class 400 | 9.00228.60 mm | 1.3835.05 mm | 7.25184.15 mm | 8 × 7/8 in | 5.50139.70 mm | 985 psig |
| Class 600 | 9.00228.60 mm | 1.3835.05 mm | 7.25184.15 mm | 8 × 7/8 in | 5.50139.70 mm | 1480 psig |
Ratings are for A105 carbon steel at 100 °F and fall with temperature. Thickness excludes the raised face. All six flange types share these dimensions.
The one flange dimension that does follow the schedule is the bore of a weld neck flange, which is machined to the inside diameter of the pipe it is welded to. A weld neck flange for standard weight NPS 3 1/2 pipe is bored 3.548 in (90.1 mm); ordered for Schedule 80 it is bored 3.364 in (85.4 mm). The schedule therefore belongs on every weld neck flange requisition.
| Class | Weld neck | Slip-on / threaded | Lap joint | Raised face height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class 150 | 2.7569.85 mm | 1.1930.23 mm | 1.2531.75 mm | 0.06 in (1.5 mm) |
| Class 300 | 3.1279.25 mm | 1.6942.93 mm | 1.7544.45 mm | 0.06 in (1.5 mm) |
Length through hub is how far the flange stands off the joint, which is what a spool drawing needs. It is measured from the flange face, without the raised face, and is tabulated here for Classes 150 and 300.
Buttweld fittings for NPS 3 1/2 pipe
ASME B16.9 sets the dimensions of a buttweld fitting from the NPS alone, so the figures below hold for every schedule in the size. A long radius 90° elbow in NPS 3 1/2 measures 5.25 in (133.3 mm) from its centre to each end, which is the figure a piping layout adds for every change of direction. The fitting is still ordered to a schedule, because its wall has to match the pipe at the weld.
| Fitting | Dimension | NPS 3 1/2 |
|---|---|---|
| 90° Long Radius Elbow | Centre-to-end A | 5.25133.35 mm |
| 90° Short Radius Elbow | Centre-to-end A | 3.5088.90 mm |
| 45° Long Radius Elbow | Centre-to-end B | 2.2557.15 mm |
| 180° Long Radius Return Bend | Centre-to-centre O | 10.50266.70 mm |
| Straight Tee | Centre-to-end C and M | 3.7595.25 mm |
| Reducing Tee | Run centre-to-end C | 3.7595.25 mm |
| Straight Cross | Centre-to-end C | 3.7595.25 mm |
| Concentric Reducer | End-to-end H | 4.00101.60 mm |
| Eccentric Reducer | End-to-end H | 4.00101.60 mm |
| Cap | Length E | 2.5063.50 mm |
The cap is the exception to the rule above: its length is for walls up to a limiting thickness, and a heavier wall takes a longer cap. See the cap page.

Common questions
What is the outside diameter of NPS 3 1/2 pipe?
NPS 3 1/2 pipe has an outside diameter of 4.000 in (101.6 mm). That outside diameter is fixed: it is identical in every schedule, and only the wall thickness — and therefore the bore — changes from one schedule to the next.
What is the inside diameter of NPS 3 1/2 schedule 40 pipe?
3.548 in (90.1 mm). The 0.226 in (5.7 mm) wall comes off the 4.000 in (101.6 mm) outside diameter twice, once on each side, which leaves that bore and a flow area of 9.89 in².
How much does NPS 3 1/2 schedule 40 pipe weigh?
9.12 lb/ft (13.57 kg/m) as plain-end carbon steel, on a wall thickness of 0.226 in (5.7 mm). It holds 0.514 US gallons of water per foot.
What is the metric equivalent of NPS 3 1/2?
DN 90. DN is a dimensionless designator, not a measurement — DN 90 pipe does not measure 90 mm anywhere. Its actual outside diameter is 101.6 mm.
